Harbin 哈尔滨

Harbin is China's ice-and-snow capital, a former Russian-influenced railway city where onion-domed churches, cobbled Central Street (中央大街) and the giant Ice and Snow World sit beside the frozen Songhua River. Come in deep winter for the ice festival, or in summer for leafy boulevards, beer gardens and river cruises at a fraction of the crowds.

Best time to go: Dec–Feb for the Ice and Snow World festival (expect −20°C); Jun–Aug and Sep for mild, walkable weatherFacts checked 2026-10-30

Getting there

Airport · HRB

Harbin Taiping International Airport 哈尔滨太平国际机场

Airport shuttle buses (机场大巴) run to Harbin Railway Station and the Central Street area in about 50–60 min for ¥20; taxi or Didi takes 45–60 min and costs roughly ¥100–130.

Railway station

Harbin Railway Station 哈尔滨站

Right on the edge of the city centre, walkable/metro to Central Street; handles conventional trains plus some high-speed services.

Railway station

Harbin West Railway Station 哈尔滨西站

Main high-speed rail hub (Beijing, Shenyang, Dalian); about 30–40 min from the centre by metro or taxi, so allow extra time.

Railway station

Harbin East Railway Station 哈尔滨东站

Smaller station for regional northeast services; rarely needed by visitors.

Getting around

Metro

Reaching the station, Taiyang Island and Central Street without braving traffic or cold

Line 2 is the tourist line, linking Central Street and Taiyang Island across the river and meeting Line 1 at Bowuguan (Museum) station.

Taxi / Didi

Airport runs, Ice and Snow World at night, and any trip in deep cold

In winter, drivers near big attractions may refuse the meter or quote flat fares — book through Didi instead and wait indoors.

City bus

Cheap coverage of neighbourhoods the metro misses

Board at the front, have small change or the transit QR code ready, and hold on — winter driving is brisk.

Shared bike

Short hops in summer and autumn only

Bikes vanish from the streets in winter; from November to March the pavements are icy enough that walking carefully beats cycling.

Walking

Central Street, St Sofia, the river embankment and Guogeli Street

Distances look short on the map but cold slows you down — plan indoor warm-up stops every 20–30 minutes.

Good to know

  • Alipay accepts Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Discover and Diners cards. Payments under ¥200 carry no Alipay service fee; payments of ¥200 or more carry a 3% fee. Verify your passport in the app to raise limits. Source
  • A travel eSIM or home SIM on roaming reaches Google, WhatsApp and Instagram without a VPN; a Chinese SIM or hotel Wi-Fi does not. Keep your home SIM active for SMS codes. Source
  • In winter your phone battery will crash in minutes outdoors: keep it in an inside pocket, carry a power bank, and warm it against your body before taking photos.
  • Buy cheap strap-on ice cleats (冰爪) from street stalls for ¥10–20 — the pavements and Central Street are polished ice from December to February.
  • Enter Ice and Snow World around 3–4pm: you get the sculptures in daylight, then the lights come on, all on one ticket — buy dated tickets online in advance.
  • Northeast Chinese portions are enormous; two dishes plus rice comfortably feeds two people, and restaurants rarely warn you.
  • Indoor heating is fierce (often 25°C+), so dress in layers you can strip off — and take advantage of free coat checks at museums, restaurants and cafés.
