Qingdao 青岛
Qingdao is a breezy seaside city where German-era red-roofed streets, hilltop views and modern skyscrapers sit beside sandy beaches. For a first visit, stay between Zhanqiao Old Town and May Fourth Square, use the metro, and eat seafood with fresh draft beer.

Good to know
- Alipay accepts Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Discover and Diners cards. Payments under ¥200 carry no Alipay service fee; payments of ¥200 or more carry a 3% fee. Verify your passport in the app to raise limits. Source
- A travel eSIM or home SIM on roaming reaches Google, WhatsApp and Instagram without a VPN; a Chinese SIM or hotel Wi-Fi does not. Keep your home SIM active for SMS codes. Source
- Draft beer is sold by weight in plastic bags at small shops (散啤); drink it the same day and pair it with clams.
- Seafood is often priced per jin (500 g); confirm the price and cooking fee before ordering, especially near Zhanqiao.
- Late spring and early summer sea fog can ground flights and cancel ferries; keep a buffer for onward travel.
- Many high-speed trains use Qingdao North (青岛北站), not Qingdao Station; check the station on your ticket.
- Beach currents are strong; swim only in lifeguarded zones in Jul–Sep and check tide times before walking out to rocks.
